Weekly Diary
Week 1
January
Met with Duncan, the manager of the company, at the studio. He gave us a tour and talked about the company a bit. Amanda Kelly was unable to work due to bereavement and the other designers were only in house on Wednesdays.
Went through samples and codes them for what country they went to. Also added the codes to the online document. We were given the keys to the studio and shown how we can lock up safely. Also what to do in event of fires or an accident. As well as how to lock up safely if we are working in the studio alone.
Created some of the hanging boards with stickers. Placed them into their catagories and coded them with the sample names and brands. Then transfered the photos onto computer and labelled them with correct names. Talked to some of the in house designers, some were Ual alumni and were telling me about what they do in studio and other jobs they have had.
February
Learnt how to create fabric flats and displacements for the website. It was useful learning how to do this on photoshop as i can use this in my 3rd year. We are having to put all of the old fabrics online as before covid there was no website. So there is now hundreds of fabrics to be photographed and flats made to go online.
I also spoke to amanda about her vintage collection she has at the studio. She is looking to sell them so i offered to help her in photographing and selling as i was really interested in the pieces.
Since coming back from fashion week i was helping out again with the website. There are lots of old fabrics that need to be photographed to be added to the website. We are having to sort through lots of the bags. But amanda and Duncan have different ways of sorting and keep asking us to do it their ways. Which then they end up fighting about it when its done wrong. There was a missing fabric that was in the wrong bag and they were shouting at eachother because they blamed eachother.
March
They havent paid me my expenses for january or February. I keep asking about it and Duncan says he will do it. However he still hasnt. Its getting quite annoying as i feel like he wont pay me.
Ive also learnt being here its just luck on what job you will get. As when i joined they were sorting through old stock. So ive been just doing that. However other interns who were here longer had learnt skills such as patter repeating. Which would be more useful for me to learn. We have been given a project to make some tye dye designs for the website. However im not really a fan of tye dye and am feeling un inspired. I will still have a go at creating during my free time though.
I created some tiedye designs. I was quite happy with them however i have been off for sickness so i havent been able to go theough them with the designers. We are currently still going through old designs to re photograph and add them to the website. they also finally paid me for the past 2 months.
Ben went through the tye dyes i did and edited some so they were better suited to be sold. They were then added to the website to be sold.
Amanda is having us sort through all old fabric and vintage clothing. I dont mind too much as she has given us lots of clothing and fabrics,
However there is alot of scrappy fabrics that could definitely go in the bin or be donated. As they will just sit here unused.
